    Abstract

  • Teak (Tectona grandis L.f.), has world-wide reputation as a primus inter pares among timber species. India has extensive teak forests, famous for its quality wood. The species is subject to serious depredation by lepidopteran insects, viz. Hyblaea puera Cramer and Eutectona machaeralis (Walker), in nurseries, plantations and natural forests. Their negative effects include retardation of growth, less flowering, fruit setting and seed production. To combat these pests, release of mass multiplied indigenous egg parasitoid, Tricogramma raoi Nagaraja, in teak forests is an effective alternative. The present article deals with these aspects and reports the recent results of a pilot project followed by a demonstration projects on bio-control of H. puera and E. machaeralis by introduction of a native egg parasitoid, T. raoi in teak forests of Madhya Pradesh, central India.
