    Abstract

  • The present paper has investigated the lac encrustation thickness of rangeeni strain across various geographical locations and host plant species in Maharashtra, over two consecutive years 2022 and 2023. The study revealed that during the year 2022, among the selected 15 localities of Maharashtra, the maximum encrustation thickness was recorded in Kalamnuri (Hingoli), on Ficus religiosa (14.30 mm), followed by Surkuda (Gondia) on Butea monosperma (13.20 mm) and Loha (Nanded) on Samanea saman (12.90 mm). Conversely, during the year 2023, among the selected 17 localities of Maharashtra, the highest thickness was  achieved in Latur on Samanea saman (16.75 mm), followed by Nanded on a Samanea saman (14.95 mm) and Loha (Nanded) on Samanea saman (12.90 mm). Notably, Ambad (Jalna), on Ficus religiosa, consistently exhibited the lowest encrustation thickness in both the study periods. These findings underscore the highly localized and annually variable nature of optimal lac-producing zones and host plant efficacy, necessitating adaptive management strategies for sustainable lac cultivation in the region.
