    Abstract

  • The Joint Forest Management (JFM) programme has been a major thrust area of forest management over the last three decades in India. The programme is operating with objective of fore st management and empowerment of local communities through sustainable resource utilization and income generation opportunities. Non-wood forest products (NWFPs) are important to JFM efforts because NWFPs are integral to the life style of forest dependent communities, particularly the tribal communities. From the several studies conducted throughout India, it is clearly visible that JFM programme has led to several positive impacts on the improvement in the condition of forests, eco-restoration and, enhancement of carbon sequestration potential of degraded soils, enhancement of income earning opportunities of the forest fringe people, development of villages in various respects, etc. Thus, forest management through communities has clear ecological, social and economic benefits.

    Keywords

  • Ecological function, eco-restoration, joint forest management, non-wood forest products, sustainability, sustainable development.
