Non-timber forest products (NTFPs) play a vital role to the tribal community and provide a source of subsistence, income and livelihood security. Lac is an export oriented NTFP, which is secreted by lac insect, Kerria lacca Kerr (Hemiptera : Kerridae), the food plants of which are Palas, Kusum, Ber, etc. It is collected from forests mainly by the tribal communities. The present study generated data on income generation of local communities from kusmi lac collection at Dindori and Mandla districts of Madhya Pradesh. A total of 45 selected lac collectors were interviewed through structural questionnaires during March, 2021-December, 2022. Results revealed that in terms of collection, 42.22% lac collectors of Dindori and Mandla districts collected 51-100 kg lac with 73.15 kg average collection followed by 33.33% collected 26-50 kg lac with average collection of 37.73 kg per annum. The data also exhibited that 6.67% collected more than 100 kg lac with 140 kg lac collection per annum. Amongst the different sources of income tribal community of Dindori and Mandla districts, majority of collectors get maximum income from agriculture (32.98%) followed by lac collection (29.73%), labour work (27.45%) and forest produce (9.85%). The present study exhibited that in Dindori and Mandla district, 46.67% collectors earned Rs. 10001-20000/- per annum from lac collection, followed by 22.22% lac collector who earned Rs. 5001-10000/- per annum. This study revealed that most of the collectors of Dindori and Mandla districts are getting supplementary income from lac collection. There is a need for capacity building and awareness on scientific methods of lac collection to enhance production and income so that it can be developed as a successful model of income generation of tribal communities.
