    Abstract

  • Indigenous communities of the Kaptai upazila generally depend on ethnomedicine for their primary health care. The purpose of the present study was to document significantly distinct ethnomedicinal plants and their ethnomedicinal knowledge among the Marma community of Kaptai upazila of Rangamati hill district. In this study, interviews and group discussions were conducted to obtain ethnomedicinal data from traditional herbalists and elderly villagers. At the same time, medicinal plants were also collected and recorded from natural wild habitats during the study period. All the plants were listed along with their scientific name, Marma name, local name, habit, family, used parts and illness treated. A total of 74 medicinal plant species under 42 families were recorded which are used to treat 53 different ailments by the traditional healers. Most frequently used family in context to the number of species used is Asteraceae. Leaves were mostly used (40%), whole plant (17%) and root (14%) along with bark, stem, flower, fruit and rhizome for the preparation of herbal medicine. Most medicinal plants were used for the treatment of fever, jaundice, cough, skin diseases, stomach problem, toothache, asthma, burning urination, diarrhea and others. The results are discussed in the light of the present findings.
