    Abstract

  • Terminalia chebula Retz. (family Combretaceae) is commonly known as Harra. Natural regeneration of this species is very poor. The scarcity of natural reproduction may be attributed to the poor germination rate of the seeds and the extensive, commercial requirement of the fruit. The present paper deals with T. chebul a in respect to germination potential, seedling growth and biomass affected by different pretreatments such as seeds soaking in H2SO4,indole butyric acid (IBA), gibberellic acid (GA3), cold water and hot water under storage. Eleven pretreatments were tried with fresh and stored seeds, seeds treated with 40% H2SO4 for 10 minutes proved to be the best treatment to estimulate seed germination potential as 46%, 54%, 60.67%, 68%, 70%, 72%, 56.67%, 48%, 42.33%, 36% and 26% in fresh and seed store for 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27 and 30 months respectively, while in control i.e. without any treatment, germination was recorded as 27.30%, 30.33%, 34%, 38%, 38%, 24%, 20%, 16%, 10% and 4% in fresh and stored seeds for 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27 and 30 months respectively. Similarly, germination velocity index, seedling growth and biomass were also found to be most promising with treatment of 40% H2SO4 for 10 minutes. The treatment was found to be highly significant (P<0.01-P<0.05%) over control and other treatments attempted.
