Dependable source of rangeeni broodlac production of Kerria lacca (Kerr.)(family Kerridae) is palas, Butea monosperma (Lam.)Taub.. (family Fabaceae). Due to various biotic and abiotic factors continuous lac production is a challenging task now-a-days in strongly acid lateritic soils of Chhotanagpur plateau region. Among different factors, effect of four levels soil fertility and three inoculation rates in 12 different combinations, replicated thrice following RCBD in factorial mode were allocated on individual palas trees in the plantation of ICAR-National Institute of Secondary Agriculture, Ranchi, to examine their effect on plant growth and rangeeni lac production in summer season of 2022-23. Different fertility levels were control (F0), basic fertility level (F1 i.e. lime 1 kg, NPK @ 130-90-240 g/ tree), twice the base level (F2) and thrice the base level (F3) and inoculation rates were 25, 50 and 75 percent of inoculable shoots. Brood lac weight per meter was found to increase steadily with increase in soil fertility; i.e. 64 g/ meter in control and 87 g/ meter in highest rate of fertilizer application. Medium rate of inoculation could show the best broodlac production (85 g/ meter). So far as growth is concerned, shoot length was influenced significantly by the highest rate (28 percent). Study also suggested that percent of lac settled shoots did not increase with inoculation rate. Improvement in all round growth of host was not noticed. Result suggested that lime alone in the present rate could not compensate the bad effect of acidification created by the nitrogenous and phosphatic fertilizers in respective levels.
